Watch: Police continue to search for missing British teenager in Tenerife

A new video has emerged showing missing British teenager Jay Slater at a nightclub hours before he went missing in Tenerife.

Slater, 19, went missing on Monday morning after attending a music festival on the Spanish island.

Lucy Law, who he attended NRG music festival with, told Sky News that he had called her and said he had “cut his leg on a cactus and had no idea where he was”.

Slater’s mother Debbie Duncan flew to Tenerife on Tuesday morning and has said she feared her son may have “been taken against his will” after she received a Snapchat message saying: “Kiss goodbye to your boy.”

She described her son as: “the life and soul" and said: “I wish I hadn’t encouraged him to go to this. I should have said: ‘Don’t go to Tenerife’."

Police have said they are keeping an “open mind” over the disappearance while the Foreign Office has said it is supporting the family.

Here is what we know, and don't know, about Slater's disappearance.

What we know

Slater, a 19-year-old apprentice bricklayer from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, had travelled to Tenerife with friends – named in local media as Lucy and Brad – to attend the NRG Tenerife Weekender music festival.

It was Slater’s first holiday abroad without his parents. The festival, which bills itself as “three days of madness featuring pool parties, boat parties, outdoor raves, nightclub takeovers and much more”, ran from Friday to Sunday.

Friend Lucy Law said Slater decided to stay out on Sunday with other people he had met at the festival while she and their other friend returned to their accommodation. She said Slater "ended up out in the middle of nowhere".

His last known location so far was near the mountain village of Masca. Law suggested this was an 11-hour walk away from where she and Brad were staying and Slater hadn't realised how far away it was. "He's set off walking, using his maps on his phone and ended up in the middle of mountains with nothing around."

Slater called Law just before 9am on Monday and said he had missed a bus back, needed water and only had 1% battery left on his phone. The phone then went flat. His last location showed as the Rural de Teno park – a mountainous area popular with hikers in north-west Tenerife.

Slater was last seen wearing a white T-shirt with shorts and trainers. He was also believed to be carrying a black bag.

A Civil Guard [Spanish police] spokesperson said he was reported missing at 9.04am on Monday.

It has also emerged that Slater shared a Snapchat an hour before he went missing, which showed him holding a cigarette at the accommodation he had visited with two men at approximately 7.30am.

The property has been named as Casa Abuela Tina - a holiday home annexed to a bar and restaurant on the edge of the village of Masca. It is understood to have been rented by two British men who are believed to have checked out on Wednesday (19 June) before flying back to the UK.

A local woman named 'Araceli', who works in the business adjoining the rental property, reportedly said Slater had been seen "walking on his own" before disappearing. She said: "I never saw the missing boy, but I know people saw him walking on his own. I saw the two British men who stayed here.

"They came in for cafe con leche a couple of times. One was aged about 40. The other one was slightly younger." She said they had arrived on Saturday and were due to stay until Monday, but left on Tuesday.

Slater's mother arrived in Tenerife on Tuesday and has since been joined by other family members.

Her partner of 11 years, Andy Watson, told The Sun that he fears Slater may have “taken a wrong turn” while out walking back to his accommodation in Tenerife. He also told LancsLive that the teen had been reluctant to go to Tenerife, saying: "[His friends] had to talk him into going. He wasn't really that keen."

The Foreign Office has said it is supporting Slater's family and in contact with the authorities on the island.

A search on the island has seen mountain rescue teams and helicopters deployed, with local residents living in Tenerife also distributing missing posters to put up around Adeje.

A fundraising appeal set up to help search for Slater, an apprentice bricklayer, has raised over £18,000.

What we don't know

We don’t know what happened to Slater in the hours after his phone battery went flat, or the physical condition he was in.

The scope of the authorities' search is also not known, though Slater's mother has said police told her they have a "more precise location" of his potential whereabouts.

We also don’t know who Slater was staying with. Law told the Manchester Evening News she had spoken to these people but didn’t give any further information about them.

She said they had told her Slater had left their apartment at about 8am yesterday to “catch a bus”.

It is also not known what condition the teenager was in when he went missing. Slater's mother was quoted by Mail Online as saying: "He'd been at a three-day festival so he would have consumed a fair bit of alcohol but Jay was Snapchatting with friends before he went missing and seemed very compos mentis."

While she has said she fears her son had been taken against his will, we do not yet know how reliable the Snapchat message she received is, or whether it was a malicious prank.
